Shooting the Mafia
When she started off her career as a photographer for a Palermo-based newspaper in 1969, Letizia Battaglia was the only woman in an all-men team. Expecting to be capturing scenes of ordinary lives, she soon found herself having to document the numerous murders and the regime of fear that the Sicilian Mafia brought daily to the city. Documentarist Kim Longinotto traces a portrait of Battaglia, now in her 80s, by combining the photographer’s account of her life and profession in those years alongside striking shots from her portfolio.
